GoldenTrail Nacional Series - Grand Final in the Azores

GTNS - GRAND FINAL IN THE AZORES - STAGE 3/3
THE AMERICAN CONQUEST
24th October 2021 – 11:30 AM Local Time (1:30 PM CET) – 31 km
1,350 m V+, Faial Island, The Azores, PORTUGAL
Janelle Lincks and Darren Thomas win the GTNS 2021 Grand Final!
The longest stage was kept for last, and it was probably the most technical as well. This week’s final showdown in the Azores was always going to be epic, and it didn’t disappoint! The runners set off at 11:30 am (local time) in the hope of taming the sharp volcanic terrain, grassy slopes, and muddy forest single tracks on Faial Island. At the end of this journey: three Golden Tickets to be able to compete at the highest international level on 3 of the Golden Trail Championship 2022 races.
Anna-Stinna wins today’s stage, Janelle wins overall
She wanted it, and she went all out to get it! Anna-Stina Erkkilä (Team Salomon, Finlande) pushed her body through its limits in the last section to bring home the victory on the third and final stage of the GTNS 2021 Grand Final. "I felt really strong today, she beamed at the finish line. I’d already run a pretty similar stage last year in the Azores and I loved it! I adore these kinds of single tracks between the trees and the technical sections. I honestly didn’t think I’d win the last stage I just wanted to keep in the top 3, but I must admit I had great legs today. I knew Janelle was way too far ahead in the standings to be able to win overall. In the end, we did the whole race together and I won, I don’t know how, leaving her behind on the last uphill just before the end. So, there you have it, I’m qualified for 3 races in the GTC 2022! I’m so proud of myself! I don’t know yet which races I’ll choose, I need to think about which ones are best suited to me, but I can’t wait!" Janelle Lincks (USA) finished a few seconds behind the Finn. "I enjoyed the whole adventure these last three days, even though I feel completely drained. My legs are toast, I’m dead! Anna-Stinna was really strong today and Jael too. I’m very happy to win this final and qualify for 3 races next year. I’d really love to do Zegama! For the other two I’ll see but it’s really exciting to be able to compete against other runners on this type of race." Despite a 4th place on this final stage, Eleanor Davis (UK) succeeded in keeping her spot on the podium. "It’s the first time this week that I’ve suffered so much, she admits. I don’t think I ate enough, and I felt drained, I wasn’t hungry and at the end I was losing it a bit. But I also knew that I was ahead of the fourth, so I tried to relax and enjoy it. I’m really happy to qualify for next year. I’d love to do the Marathon du Mont-Blanc and Sierre-Zinal. Then, if there’s a race in the USA, I will probably go!"
Abraham once again, and Darren was too strong!
Abraham Hernandes (Mexico) was already impressive on the second stage on São Jorge, once again he showed his talent on Faial today by finishing more than 4 minutes ahead of his first pursuer. "I’m happy because I ran a great race and caught up a lot of time, but it was tough! My legs are toast from the successive days of running. At least I get my podium spot, which was my main goal because now I’m qualified for 3 races next year, it’s really fabulous for me and I’m thrilled!" Thanks to his second place Daniel Castillo Fernandez (C.A.A Marathon Crevillent, Spain) secures his qualification in the GTC 2022, by also finishing 2nd in the overall ranking. "It was a different race from the previous days with a combination of tough volcanic terrain and forest trails that were both fast and technical. I’m thrilled with this result because I want to keep improving and for that, to do international races with elite runners is fantastic! This is an amazing opportunity for me." Even though he finished third in today’s stage, Darren Thomas (Team Salomon, USA) had too much of lead over his competitors to be caught up in the overall ranking. Therefore, he wins the GTNS 2021 Grand Final. "It was a completely new experience for me to do a stage race and it wasn’t easy to manage. I knew I had to be strategic but when I saw Juan Carlos shoot off, I was a trifle scared. Fortunately for me, he blew up and I could catch up with him and confirm my first place overall. I’m really pleased with my qualification because this was my first ever race in Europe and next year, I would love to run the legendary races like Sierre-Zinal or Zegama and go up against the world’s best athletes."

Golden Trail Nacional Series | Grand Final in the Azores:

GTNS GRAND FINAL IN THE AZORES– Stage 2/3
The Elements Lash Out
23rd October 2021 – MIDDAY Local Time (2PM CET) – 29 km
1,700 m V+, Sao Jorge Island, The Azores, PORTUGAL
Between the scorching sun and heavy rain, the GTNS athletes were up against the elements in the second stage of the Grand Final in the Azores.
The day appeared to be a stunner on the beautiful São Jorge Island. In the distance Pico was silhouetted in the warm rays of sun that danced on the ocean waves creating thousands of glittering reflections. But logistical blips forced the organisers to delay the start, originally scheduled at 11 am, by one hour, and what had until then been a gentle warm caress suddenly turned into stifling heat. In the distance, clouds heralding a sudden change in the weather seemed drawn towards the volcanic shores. Runners were still making their way along the coastline when the rain suddenly engulfed them. Between relief and disillusion, they had to choose their mood!
Janelle, again!
She appeared way too strong. Right from the first kilometres Janelle Lincks (USA) took the lead and didn’t let anyone overtake, creating a greater and greater gap over her pursuers as the kilometres passed. "I don’t think I set off too fast, she confided at the finish. But as soon as I hit the first climb, at km 13, I pushed. I had to manage the technical sections, and I fell twice… But over the last five, fairly flat, kilometres I gave it full gaz because I knew they could catch up with me. I’m pretty happy with my race and I feel like I managed it well. For tomorrow, obviously, the aim is to defend this first place, but I don’t want to kill myself either. I have a big race in Moab in November and I’d like to be able to do it well." Third in the first stage, Eleanor Davis (UK) gained one position on this second stage. "I’m so glad it rained… It was really hot at the start, and it really helped. The course route was magnificent and was much more suited to me with flatter sections and I especially liked the downhills. Thanks to that I was one place higher today. It’s great but we’ll see what the body says tomorrow because I never do more than 80 kilometres a week, otherwise I get injured. Usually, I compensate with a lot of cycling, so we’ll see how the last stage pans out." Anna-Stinna Erkkilä (Team Salomon, Finland), second yesterday, finished third this time. "It was pretty hard today, she confides. I pushed as much as I could, but I never managed to catch them. I could see them in front of me throughout the race, I thought I could catch up to them in the downhills, but no. I’m still thrilled to be so consistent after having run at El Hierro. Tomorrow, I’ll have to run a smart race to keep my place on the podium."
The Hispanic Revolution
On the first day they were discreet, the Hispanic runners have now taken over and the leader of the revolution: Abrahan Hernandes (Mexico) finished more than two minutes ahead of his pursuers. "It was a very tough stage but the race course gave me an opportunity that I wanted to grab. So, I set off in the lead and I’m really proud that I kept it. For tomorrow, I will just give everything I have, and obviously my goal is to go for the podium." Behind him is the Spaniard Daniel Castillo Fernadez (C.A.A Marathon Crevillent, Spain). " There was good and bad today but I’m happy with my race as I could catch up on some time and most importantly, some places. Now, I need to keep an eye on the top 5 and I’m going to do what I can for the podium." It is another Mexican, Juan Carlos Carera (Team Buff, Mexico) who completes the podium. "The race was really fast in comparison with yesterday. It was very hot at the start and then it rained. You had to manage all that but I’m still very pleased with my race. I tried to find my rhythm with some very stony and tricky sections. Tomorrow I am of course going to try for the podium."

Golden Trail National Series | Grand Final in the Azores:

GTNS GRAND FINAL IN THE AZORES – Stage 1/3
The American Dream in the Azores
22nd October 2021 – 9 AM Local Time (11AM CET) – 27 km
2,400 m V+, Pico Island, The Azores, PORTUGAL
The Americans took charge of the first stage of the GTNS final in the Azores with a double-whammy male and female win.
Pico, 9 am. The sun smothers the wave-ravaged volcanic rocks with a warm glow, the ocean was kind to the runners who took the ferry from Horta to this first stage of the GTNS Grand Final. There are around 30 runners who qualified on the 11 Golden Trail National Series across the world, secretly hoping to defend their country’s flag at this ultimate showdown in the Azores archipelago. But at the end of this first day, it looks like the Americans have taken control!
Janelle, in the women’s…
She only discovered trail running last year. Coming from Colorado, Janelle Lincks (USA) was mostly a road and track specialist before discovering a passion for trail races, particularly short and steep ones. However, she managed to play her cards right in the first stage with 27km and 2,400m of vertical elevation, and its vertical kilometre on the last 4 kilometres. "I’m not used to running such long distances, she reveals after crossing the finish line. Usually I explode around the 20th km, it was the case today but I had enough of a lead to pull it off. From the start, I shot off in front and ran my race without looking back. I’m really happy but we’ll see what happens in the days to come because I’ve never done a stage race." Behind her we find Anna-Stinna Erkkilä (Team Salomon, Finland). After taking part in the GTWS Grand Final on El Hierro last week, she preferred to set out slower before gradually moving through the field to the race leaders. "It was my plan, I didn’t want to set off too fast and just hang in there. I managed the race well by limiting damage on the runnable terrain at the bottom and I started coming back on the long muddy section. Then, before attacking the climb towards Pico’s summit, I decided to stop at the aid station and really eat and drink properly. It paid off because I shot up through the field. I saw Janelle in front of me and I even thought I would catch her, but it wasn’t enough. We’ll see what happens in the next two stages." Eleanor Davis (UK) completes the podium. "It was a magnificent first stage but tough! The hardest part was coming back down the vertical kilometre after crossing the finish line to get back down to the refuge and finally eat and drink! I loved the flat section at the start and then there was the muddy section that I found pretty tough. And what can I say about the final climb… it destroys your legs! Despite all that I’m really pleased with this 3rd place."
… and Darren in the men’s.
He was definitely one of the favourites, Darren Thomas (Team Salomon, USA) didn’t disappoint and won the first stage. "We set off pretty fast with Juan Carlos and Kieran, but they left me for dead in the muddy section where I didn’t know where to plant my feet. Then I saw them in the distance at the aid station just before the climb to the summit and I thought I better give it some gaz. I caught them up pretty quick and then took the lead. It’s a stunningly beautiful course but really tough. I live in a dry desert area of America, so I know nothing about mud! And the last section was definitely the most technical that I’ve ever run in my life!" Behind him we find another big favourite, Juan Carlos Carera (Team Buff, Mexico). "The race was really hard today. They set off really fast and I had to keep up. On the technical sections I managed better and I’m really very pleased with this result. Now, I just need to see how the two other stages will pan out." Moritz Heide (Team Adidas Terrex, Germany) completes the podium. "It was long, slippery, muddy, and rocky! A mega tough stage. I loved the bottom runnable section but after it was more difficult to manage. I can’t wait to continue the battle tomorrow and the day after tomorrow!"
